Renfe Mercancías has given the two Railsider companies, Atlántico and Mediterráneo, the carbon footprint certificate, which the company awards to its customers to quantify the fact that the transportation of this company's goods with Renfe Mercancías led to a saving of 44,712 net tons of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere in 2023, compared to the emissions that would have been produced if the same transportation had been carried out by road.
Renfe Mercancías transported 971,488 net tons for Railsider in 2023. Of the total number of tons transported, 569,201.7 tons was by Railsider Atlántico, which saved 28,285 tons of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Meanwhile, Railsider Mediterráneo used Renfe Mercancías trains to transport 402,286 net tons, with consequent environmental savings, as this traffic avoided the emission of 16,427.5 tons of emissions into the atmosphere.
Almost 95% of the transport that Renfe Mercancías carried out for this company was carried out using electric traction trains that produce no environmental emissions as they use energy from sources that are certified 100% renewable.
Renfe Mercancías has had carbon neutral certification for its electric trains since 2023, in accordance with the requirements of the PAS 2060 “carbon neutrality” standard, which ensures that there are no direct or indirect emissions at source, by using renewable energy with a certificate of origin guarantee and adopting measures to reduce energy consumption and efficiency.
Renfe Mercancías' initiative to issue Carbon Footprint Certificates is in line with the company's firm commitment to sustainability and the environment as one of the main attributes of its activity, along with the safety of people and goods, quality, reliability and efficiency.
